Underwater Hockey?!

June 15th, 2009

I gotta admin this one caught my attention.  Heard of underwater hockey?  We hadnt either.  But imagine that wicked workout we get on the ice, only submerged.  That has got to be a crazy cardio workout.

The Denver Underwater Hockey Club is looking for new players to join us for pick-up practices, tournaments, socializing, and more.
Underwater hockey is a fast-paced, fun-filled, co-ed team sport played in a swimming pool. It’s great for athletes of all ages. Swimming, scuba diving, or snorkeling experience is helpful, but not necessary — they’ll happily teach you everything you need to know to enjoy this unique, 3-D sport.

WHERE: Weekly, drop-in practices held at Carmody Rec Center in Lakewood.
Wednesdays, 8-9:30pm
Sundays, 4-5:30pm

WHAT TO BRING: If you have snorkeling gear (mask, fins and snorkel) that you’re comfortable with, bring it. But we also have plenty of equipment for you to borrow.
All you really need is a swimsuit!
To find out more about the equipment used, visit their Equipment Page.

You can finally be a hockey badass in a Speedo!

Adult Pickup Hockey

May 20th, 2009

Having organized adult pickup hockey games for over two years I can safely say that while very rewarding it can be a royal pain in the hockey breezers. For all you other organizers out there you’ll easily relate to this blog post and for you players…please remember how lucky you are that all you have to do is show up and play the greatest game on earth.

The skinny of what an adult pickup hockey organizer has to deal with.

  • Securing Ice - Sounds easy enough but depending on where you are this can be a process.
  • Letting players know - Again sounds easy especially with email but you’d be surprised how many people don’t check or don’t reply and just assume you’ll know they want to play
  • Confirming Goalies - Nothing like getting a call a couple of hours before game time and one of your goalies can’t make it. Try showing up and telling the guys/gals.
  • Collecting money - First of all if someone says they’re coming and doesn’t there goes money out the window. Secondly, you’d think people would offer up their $10-$15 when they see you but no…you have to chase half the people down.
  • Keeping the teams even. There’s always going to be someone complaining that the teams are uneven. Try matching up the skills of 18-20 adult  hockey players.

I haven’t even covered everything but you get my point. The good news is there’s a tool to make organizing an adult hockey pickup game or kids pickup game for that matter. It’s Hockeyfinder.com! Have players sign themselves up online, have the teams already made up, collect money in advance, attract extra players to fill up spots so you don’t have to incure the extra cost of ice….and much more!
