A good friend of mine sent me a cool article from Discovery News about the history of ice skating called “Ice Skating Born of Necessity” by Rossella Lorenzi. Coming from Canada, I would argue with any European that the game originated here in North America but as for ice skating well I guess I’ll give them that.

The word “hockey” either comes from the French ‘hoquet’ - a shepherd’s crook - or from the Iroquois “hoghee”, meaning tree branch, which was often used as a stick. I’ll go with the Iroquois, being that they were the ones who made the sticks for Creighton and the other founding fathers of the game.
Hockey actually existed before ice skating. Hockey’s ancestry dates back to the Kouros from Greece (c. 600 - 480 BCE), depicted from a ball and stick game. My guess is CCM didn’t exist back then.
Hockey actually started in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada back in the mid 1800’s
There will be a test this Friday immediately following our game.
