San Jose has the largest adult hockey league in the country

I didn’t believe it when I read it either.

“The San Jose arena is home to 130 adult hockey teams, with more than 2,000 players making the league the largest in the nation. Women account for approximately 10 percent of the older competitors (nationally, there are nearly 60,000 registered female players). One need only tune into a Sharks broadcast to see that in the South Bay, hockey has become, well, icy-hot.”

I think it’s great that hockey is “icy-hot” in San Jose and other places in California. As a Canadian, it’s nice to see the game you grew up with grow and now that I live in the U.S it’s become even more important to me. Back in Canada, hockey was always the talk at work, with friends, virtually anywhere but now it’s always football and baseball first and then maybe a side note about hockey. I think that’s why Pickup Hockey Finder has become so important to me. I think our goal of having games listed all over the country is very realistic and would be great for the hockey community. Imagine going to visit family or friends in another city or moving to another city and being able to find a pick up game with the click of a mouse. Or traveling for work and bringing along your hockey bag to play a game. I think that once organizers start using the site they’ll realize how much time and effort it will save them and make their pickup games more enjoyable.

Pick up hockey finder gaining some traction

The play times are posted on the skate times page under the Greater Los Angeles region of the website. This game is organized by Leeham and happens every friday & Saturday night from 8PM to 10PM. We think we have a winner

Two hockey events I’d like to see here in the U.S.

There’s an interesting stat I’d like to share with you before I get into this post…
The number of registered hockey players in Canada is 428,390 or 1.11% of the population and in the U.S. 435,737 or 0.15% of the population.

I find this stat very interesting not only because I would have never guessed it but because it’s nice to see there’s that many registered hockey players here in the U.S. The game of hockey has definitely had it’s ups and downs over the years but things seem to be rolling along nicely at the moment. That’s why I say it’s definitely not the time to take the foot off the pedal. This is precisely why I’d like to see events similar to Kraft Hockeyville and Play On here in the U.S. (Note: Play On is looking for people to organize here in the U.S.). The potential for growth in the United States is huge and with the number of professional teams here, the NHL and everyone involved should be sponsoring, starting or assisting in events such as these to help promote grassroots hockey.

I guess what I’m getting at is I’m ready to plug away and help be apart of promoting hockey here in the U.S. and around the world. I’ve already registered www.hockeyvilleusa.com to get the ball rolling.
